With this set-up there was no popping the joint in the oven, turning a knob, perhaps setting the timer, and watching TV while the joint roasted at a nice even temperature ....

For a start, fuel had to be brought, a fire laid, lit and stoked .... Then after the meal the dishwasher was a person - and not a machine to be filled with crocks then started with a push of a button and forgotten.

But the fire made tasty toast!
